Head instructor -
Sensei Richard started off in martial arts doing Zen Chi Ryu at the age of fourteen to the age of seventeen – achieving a rank of 3rd Kyu (Equivalent of BBMA red belt). Sensei Richard then travelled overseas and upon his return did not return to martial arts – something he came to regret at a later time. In 2004 Sarah (Sensei’s daughter) at aged 7 commenced training at Black Belt Karate Studios (Soon to evolve into BBMA) in Wyoming with her primary instructor being Sensei Jason and Sempai Rachel. During many of those classes Sensei Richard was watching on - regretting not having continued with martial arts. So he made the decision to finish what he started and took up training as well. On the road to black belt, Sensei (then Sempai) Richard started teaching classes at Tumbi Umbi Dojo when he achieved his advanced red belt. Sensei Richard achieved his black belt at the December 2007 black belt grading. Confirming to Shodan in May of 2008 before achieving the rank of Nidan in December of 2009. Sempai Sarah achieved her black belt in December of 2008 and confirmed to Shodan in May of 2009. Sarah was also a member of NSW State Team of 2009 and again in 2010. Sarah’s titles include NSW AKF 12/13 yo Sydney All Stars Kumite Champion 2009, NSW AKF 14/15 yo Kata Champion, Bronze - Australian National Karate Championships 14/15 Team Kata (With Alice Carrett and Sam Gosling). Sarah has had multiple podium finishes in both NSW AKF and NSW National All Styles tournaments between 2007 and 2012. In August of 2009 Sensei Richard achieved a promotion in his employment which meant moving to the Snowy Mountains area. As such he and Sarah sought out a Martial Arts school with a similar ethos, training and professionalism as Black Belt Martial Arts. Sensei Richard and Sarah travelled over a 100km radius from their home and were unable to find a school suitable to fulfil their needs. After consulting with Kyoshi Liz Mahler, Sensei Richard made the decision to start up Black Belt Martial Arts Snowy Mountains. On a cold August Jindabyne afternoon in 2010 – in a class room of Snowy Mountains Grammar School six students came for a trial lesson. Four of them came back the next week. Those four students graduated to Advanced 6th Kyu (Advanced Purple) at the December 2011 grading – with 28 other students. Black Belt Martial Arts – Snowy Mountains is achieving its goal of: Expanding at a rate that sustains high quality Martial Arts training while offering a family friendly atmosphere where family members are able to train with each other.
